Within celebrations for the X Edition of the Cancun International Music Festival, a special edition will take place, the International Trumpet Competition that will have the distinction of being presided by the virtuoso Venezuelan trumpeter Pacho Flores.
The Contest aims to encourage the professional training of trumpeters and promote the practice of the instrument, it seeks to assess the skill in the interpretation of the trumpet taking into account factors such as musicality, style, security and coherence in the interpretative discourse.
BASES

1.- Categories:
This contest is open to trumpeters of all nationalities.
It is organized in a single category, in which candidates may not exceed the age of 35 years before October 1, 2023.
2.- Registration:

The registration fee is $2,000.00 Mexican pesos
It will be mandatory to accompany the registration application with a cover letter including a recommendation signed by a prominent personality in music (such as conservatory or university professor, conductor, music critic etcetera).
Candidates holding a higher education degree or currently studying it will be highly valued.
If the registration is approved including all the required information and documentation, you will receive a communication via email with the bank details to make the registration payment.
The registration period: Begins on the day of publication of this call and ends at 23:59 on September 30, 2023 or when the maximum number of places is covered (whichever comes first).
There is a limit of 20 contestants, The approved registration order is taking in consideration.
3.- Grounds for contesting
The contest will take place in two phases.
- Elimination: Thursday, October 19, 2023 in the city of Cancun.
- Final: Friday, October 20, 2023 in the city of Cancun.
4.- Repertoire
The contestants must prepare the following repertoire organized in two phases; qualifying and final.
QUALIFYING PHASE: Execution of three plays from the following blocks (choose one from each block):

- Trumpet Concerto in D major (1st mvt) – G.P. Telemann
- Trumpet Concerto in D major (1st mvt) – L. Mozart
- Trumpet Concerto in D major (1st movt) – J.F. Fasch

5.- Jury
The jury will be made up of 3 renowned specialist musicians and two personalities from the cultural environment of Cancun.
President: Pacho Flores (International Trumpet Soloist, Stomvi House Artist, Founding Director of the Latin American Trumpet Academy in Venezuela).
Secretary: Sebastian Gil (Artistic Director of the International Trumpet Festival in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, Spain).
Vocal: Jean-Christophe Dobrzelewski (Congress Director of the International Trumpet Guild).
The jury’s decision will be announced on Saturday, October 21, 2023, during the grand Gala concert of the Cancun International Music Festival. Either Trumpeter Pacho Flores, the president of the jury, or the event’s presenter will communicate the decision, which will be final and cannot be appealed.
6.- Awards
The contest will award the following prizes valued at an amount exceeding $5,000 usd.
Prize for the 1st place winner.
- $20,000.00 Mexican pesos.
- Participant diploma.
- A scholarship to attend the International Trumpet Festival of Maspalomas in Gran Canaria, Spain in July 2024 and participation as a soloist or as a special guest in a recital of the same festival. (The scholarship consists of participation in academic activities, lodging and food during the days of the Festival. Transportation is not included).
- Registration for the International Trumpet Guild Conference 2024 to be held in California, United States.
- Access to the Mentor Brass course by Pacho Flores valued at €1000.
- Gift Certificate from FIM Cancun Sponsors.
Prize for the winner of the 2nd. place
- $10,000.00 Mexican pesos.
- Participant diploma.
- A scholarship to attend the International Trumpet Festival of Maspalomas Gran Canaria, Spain in July 2024. (The scholarship consists of participation in academic activities, lodging and food during the days of the Festival. Transportation is not included).
- Registration for the International Trumpet Guild Conference 2024 to be held in California, United States.
- All participants registered in the contest receive a participation certificate and a festival kit.
7.- Accompanying pianist.
The organization will provide the contestants with an accompanist pianist available for rehearsal two days before the start of the contest.
Note, that contestant is be free to appear at the contest with their own accompanying pianist (all expenses for accompanying pianists must covered by the contestant).
8.- Rules and general information (IMPORTANT TO READ).
- Participation in the contest implies unconditional acceptance of its bases and rules.
- The dress code for the semifinal is casual and for the final it is formal (Long pants and long-sleeved shirt).
- All contestants must have with them on the day of the eliminatory round and the final the printed scores of the works they will perform.
- Registration in this contest allows FIM Cancun (Cancun International Music Festival) the right to make use of all information, data, photographic, video and musical material provided by contest participants and generated in relation to the contest and to FIM Cancún, to be used for publicity, promotion and dissemination purposes before, during and after the Festival without a deadline.
- The Contest Committee will notify the contestants of the participation logistics via email.
- Lodging (hotel) expenses, and air and land transportation to get to Cancun and within the city on the days of the Contest, are the responsibility of each participant.
- The organization of the contest recommends you, for safety and economy, to use the transportation companies and official hotels of the festival (Request information in the email vivecancun@fimcancun.com To obtain preferential rates and advice to enjoy tours, restaurants and information on tourist attractions from Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean).
- It is the responsibility of the participant to cover the expenses for any medical need, hospitalization and/or medicines, (It is recommended to travel with medical expenses insurance).
- All minor contestants must travel with a companion of legal age and must deliver to the contest organization a responsive letter from parents or guardians authorizing participation. The organization of the contest is not responsible for the safety of a minor who travels alone to compete.
- The Contest Organizing Committee will timely notify all contestants via email of any changes that may have to be made in the contest process.
- The total or partial breach of any of the bases of this call or an inappropriate ethical behavior, will determine the elimination of the applicant.
